Understanding the Five Components of Reading & Why

Why?

Our goal in working with students is to provide explicit instruction and practice in each and every one of these categories. The problem with many "OG-based" programs or curriculums is that they "miss the boat" a bit in some of these areas. If we are not focusing on comprehension as the END goal of reading, we are not doing our jobs.

While we are working through a systematic phonics based curriculum with a focus on phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and decoding - we cannot forget about fluency and comprehension including vocabulary.

It is paramount that we ask our students about meaning and thought processes and to reflect on their reading even at the sentence level! Do not lose sight of what we are ultimately trying to accomplish because if we do, the skills will not generalize well and students will not use the strategies presented in learning therapy sessions because it doesn't seem applicable outside of our work together.
